Five breaths before breakfast: a tiny morning ritual

You don’t need an hour on the mat to change the shape of your morning. Five slow breaths, taken before anything else, are enough to begin.

Start smaller than you think

Most morning routines fail because they ask too much. A full practice, a journal, a cold shower, before your feet have even found the floor. The ritual we teach at Yogagrove asks for five breaths. That is the whole practice.

Sit on the edge of the bed. Let the exhale be a little longer than the inhale. Notice the room: its temperature, its light. By the fifth breath, you have already done the important thing: you began the day on purpose, not on autopilot.

Why it works

Slow exhalation nudges the nervous system toward its rest state, lowering heart rate before the day’s first demands arrive. Done daily, those five breaths become a doorway. And doorways, practiced often enough, become homes.
